Welcome to the Punjab the Land of Five Rivers & the great Gurus. This State is the chief wheat producing area of the country. That’s why the state is known for its production of sports and hosiery goods. The major city in the Punjab is Amritsar, the holy city of the Sikhs. Harminder sahib Temple which is very famous in India is in Amritsar. This temple is fully plated with gold sheets. It is also called Golden temple. Chandigarh, a new planned city, was conceived and built in the 1950s to serve as the capital of the new Punjab. In 1966, Punjab underwent another split. It was divided into the predominantly Sikh and Punjabi- speaking state of Punjab and the state of Haryana. At the same time some of the northern parts of the Punjab were hived off to Himachal Pradesh. Chandigarh on the border of Punjab and Haryana, remains the capital of the two states, yet is administered as a union territory from Delhi.

The state tourism sector also makes efforts to promote the traditional and local handicrafts of Punjab, India. Punjab, India is known for its wonderfully carved furniture. The local Punjabi carpenters are famous for the lovely furniture especially low seats known as peerian.
